Wrongful Dismissal

1) Can they fire me for no reason at all?

Yes, an employer can terminate your employment whenever the employer wishes for no particular reason at all. The employer is not allowed to terminate an employee's employment for any reason related to human rights, such as race, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, pregnancy, etc. However, for example, the employer is allowed to let you go because the employer does not like your personality (even though you are a wonderful person!) or if the employer prefers to get rid of you so that his or her bottom line improves.

All this is not to say that the employee has no rights. Although an employer can technically let an employee go for any reason, other than prohibited by law, unless the employer has cause for dismissal, the employer is under a legal obligation to provide the employee the appropriate notice period and/or severance pay package. This basically means that, unless the employee did something wrong (i.e. steal from the employer or work improperly), the employer has to either provide the employee with a sum of money and/or appropriate working notice period.
