Family Law
7) How can I make the process less expensive?
The best way is to be organized and prepared. Family law disputes generally involve alot of documentation. Finding and sorting through your financial documents (including your Income Tax Returns and Notices of Assessment for the last three years) in advance of meeting with your lawyer is an excellent start. Providing documents to your lawyer and responding to their requests quickly will also move the process along and save you time and money. Also, going to court is very expensive. Another way to make the process less expensive is to try and reach an agreement with your spouse, rather than going to court. If you do go to court but you conducted yourself in a reasonable manner during the litigation and tried to settle the issues in dispute, this may be reflected in the costs award.
